Our climate is basically a very harsh climate, with cold and snow. Old people will tell you about nights spent in the stable, the icy wind, the heavy snow... but also the conviviality of days spent by the fire, tarot games, and fondue evenings. With climate change, our recent winters have been less harsh. But don't be fooled, it's still cold here!

Everyone knows Mouthe, the coldest village in France. Its record low is -36.7°C, and this village is an hour's drive from us. But much closer to home, just a few minutes from Morteau, is located in La Brévine. This small village, also called the “Siberia of Switzerland,” holds the record for the coldest temperature in Switzerland: -41.8°… Brrrrr
The Doubs basins sometimes freeze over. The ice traps the river, changing our landscapes, emitting cracking sounds and other unusual sounds... A magical spectacle! Just across the border, the Lac des Taillères often freezes over, making it a paradise for skaters and walkers.

At home, we adapt. We change our clothes, we put on snow tires, and we adapt our sports. Winter is ideal for cross-country skiing. Our rolling mountains lend themselves readily to this sport, and our landscapes will make you forget that it's still very hilly! Snowshoe enthusiasts will also enjoy it, whether on the slopes or blazing their own trails.
Let's talk about snow tires! Following the Mountain Law, which came into effect on November 1, 2021, you must be equipped to drive on our roads. This means that your vehicle must:
– either have removable anti-skid devices (metal or textile snow chains) in the trunk to equip at least two drive wheels,
– or be equipped with four winter tires.

Even if the winter isn't the harshest, we know where to find snow. First, we have to gain a little altitude. In the area of Morteau, go up towards the Gardot. The track between the Gardot and the Cernonier is a real fridge in the woods. On the Mont Chateleu side there is also always snow, especially in the north-facing fields.
Near Charquemont, above Combe Saint Pierre, there's still a patch of snow. And in Damprichard, at La Montée, in the square, with pebble skis, we're still wearing skis!
If you really can't find snow in these parts, then you'll have to travel a few kilometers and cross the border. Around La Vue des Alpes and Pouillerel, you'll definitely find some!

In reality, nothing is insurmountable... so all you have to do is enjoy yourself.
