Clock-making expertise

Fabrication d'une horloger comtoise © Pierre JouilleFrom the 18th century onwards, next to their agricultural activity, the farms contain, notably during the winter months, the workshops of farmer clock-makers. Their genius and their knowhow, a mixture of specialized techniques and precision, are evident from the realisation of the first sketches to the finalized pendulums, clocks and watches.A special school, today the "Lycée Edgar Faure",was opened in Morteau to teach clockmaking.

2300 clockmakers inhabited the Valley in 1880.Their activities represent all stages of clock manufacture from the making of hands, pendulums and bracelets or the enamelling of the dials to the assembling of mechanic clocks. This last activity, abandoned at the arrival of quartz technology,is now again expanding.
